Co. Sligo reach Connacht Senior Cup Final!!
Having beaten Castlebar in the quarter finals Sligo met Longford in Athlone CC on Sunday. The game was well won by Longford. But it emerged that Longford had used an illegal player in both this match and the quarter finals v Ballaghaderreen. The Connacht Cricket Union acted quickly and Longford were eliminated from this year’s competition. It was a good lesson to all the Connacht clubs. Ballaghaderreen were offered a semi final re Sligo but they were gracious enough to allow Sligo through as they had accepted defeat earlier in the competition. Such drama but it now means that Co. Sligo will play hosts Co. Galway at Galway CC this Sunday starting at 12pm. If you are travelling in the area or want to come along I am sure the boys would appreciate the support.
WE HAVE FOUND A GROUND!!!
The club have secured the use of the green area within County Sligo Races, Cleveragh. Many thanks to Brian Kennedy and the committee of the racetrack for this. Now the real work begins as we need to get the ground in some shape with home fixtures fast approaching. There will be a work party this Saturday 7th May 12.30 at the racetrack. All welcome to help out or even have a peek!! Also note we have created a new Facebook page where club updates, photos etc can be added. This will replace the existing group on Facebook. Click the link below to the page and then press the like button to get all the news.
Welcome to a new season with the same old challenges!! As ever the main priority is to find a ground in Co. Sligo to play home matches and provide cricket to all. We will continue efforts with this and fingers crossed on some good news. County Sligo will be taking part in three competitions this year, The Connacht League, Connacht Cup (new knockout comp.) and the Midlands Dick O'Neill cup. The fixtures will be finalised in the next 2 months and posted on this site. Further information on coaching courses will also be available here.
On 29th October 2010 the Connacht Cricket Union was formed under the umbrella of Cricket Ireland. County Sligo is one of 7 clubs affiliated with the new union. Congratulations to Sligo's Paul Mercer and Muhammad Asif who are now part of the committee. This is good news for cricket in the west and should bring a better structure around competitive and development cricket in Connacht. To see the full article click here.
